Use of materials in the Rare Book, Genealogical, and Local History Reference Rooms Policy

In order to preserve and conserve our materials so that as many patrons as possible have continued access to our wonderful resources, it has been necessary to approach historical and genealogical research in a different manner. Therefore, as of January 1, 2000 the following policy will be in effect:

  • 1. Patrons will no longer be allowed to conduct unattended, unsupervised research in the individual rooms listed above. Instead, materials will be brought out to each patron and research must be conducted in the inside reading room at the designated tables.
  • 2. Books and/or materials retrieved from the Rare Book Rooms and the Genealogy Room will be recorded on a form by assisting personnel. Patrons will be asked to sign this form and present identification before the books and/or materials are presented to them. This list will be used to make sure the materials have been accounted for and not abused when the patron is finished with them.
  • 3. Patrons must use only pencils. Ink pens, markers, or any other types of writing instrument that is not a pencil ware prohibited.
  • 4. Up to four volumes or folders can be used at one time.
  • 5. Volumes and folders must be returned to reference personnel before any other materials can be used.
  • 6. Please do not leave research materials unattended at your research area. When you are finished return materials to library personnel.
The library will make every effort to insure that library personnel will be available to retrieve your needed materials.

Approved by the Taunton Public Library Board of Trustees, October 18, 1999
