De-Accessioning Policy

It shall be the policy of the Taunton Public Library Board of Trustees that the de-accessioning of library materials, equipment, and furnishing purchased through municipal, federal and/or state grants, and gift donations, shall be decided by the library director and the assistant director, with the assistance or recommendation of the Supervisor of Reference and adult services, the Supervisor of Children’s Services, the Educational Reference Technology Librarian, and/or the Custodian.

All library materials, equipment or furnishings individually valuable at $300.00 or more shall not be discarded without the permission of the City of Taunton Committee of Public Property, in compliance with the city ordnance.

All other library materials valued individually at less than $300.00 shall, in compliance with a ruling by the city solicitor in November 1979, be turned over to the Friends’ of the Taunton Public Library for their fund raising activities.

Furnishings and equipment valued individually at less than $300.00 shall be disposed of, if possible, in a useful manner and in compliance with all state and city laws of disposal.

Staff members interested in discarded/de-accessioned materials individually valued at more than $300.00 should contact the director who can make such interest known to the City of Taunton’s Public Properties Committee.

Staff members interested in discarded/de-accessioned materials individually valued at less than $300.00 should contact the Friends of the Taunton Public Library about the material.
